What is ESDM - Early Start Denver Model

ESDM is an inclusive behaviour oriented model for little children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The Early Start Denver Model commenced in Colorado in the early 80s. Later, in 2003 two professors Sally Rogers and Geri Dawson developed the model further using practices drawn from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and a developmental curriculum. They addressed the needs of toddlers with ASD applying intensive play activities to build up language, verbal and non verbal communication, motor and life skills.

What ESDM focuses on?

The main focus of ESDM is teaching toddlers all the essential skills through nature based play activities. To add, this model considers and involves the quality and emotional interaction between the parents and the children.

The model:

  1. It is based on understanding of typical toddler development and behaviour
  2. It focuses on building positive relationships between toddlers and parents
  3. Learning occurs through play and every day activities (Natural Environmental Teaching)
  4. Play based learning boosts communication and interaction

Is ESDM successful?

Plenty of studies have shown the benefits of ESDM as an early intervention for toddlers with ASD. It is shown that ESDM is the only validated intervention for young children aged 18-48 months with ASD. Toddlers have shown improvements in their language, communication and social behaviour. Research studies can be found here: Research studies on ESDM

Who can provide ESDM?

Anyone who has been trained ESDM certified trainers can provide ESDM services. That includes psychologists, behaviour specialists, developmental paediatricians, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.
